Ultra-High Temperature Magnetic Bearings for Space Vehicle Systems

Magnetic bearing technology is an enabling technology for new advanced engine designs. Rolling element bearings in gas turbines are being pushed to their limits and new bearing technologies are critical for many industries.

NASA, in particular, has a need for ultra-high temperature bearing systems to achieve its goals of lighter weight and higher temperature gas turbine engines to improve efficiency and decrease noise and emissions.

The following paper, written by scientists from Electron Energy, provides a project summary of research and objectives for the NASA-sponsored SBIR program on “Novel Ultra-High Temperature Magnetic Bearings for Space Vehicle Systems.”
